Family-Friendly Houston Venues Reopening & Virtual Events


The country as a whole has had to quarantine to fight the Coronavirus. However, there is some hope after Governor Abbot started reopening Texas. Businesses and families can now get some relief from having to stay indoors. It, therefore, only makes sense that many Houstonians are rearing to go. But, it helps to know which venues are reopening, and which virtual events are family-friendly. You must, however, remember to adhere to social distancing and the use of masks when out in public. Our list below will show you.

Stewart Beach

Location: 201 Seawall Blvd, Galveston, TX 77550

Stewart Beach is a popular family destination with tons of activities making it Galveston’s premier family beach park. Highly trained lifeguards are on-site, with clean restrooms, showers, and umbrella and chair rentals. There are plenty of fun activities for the whole family, such as beach volleyball, giant water slide, playground and much more.

Sunny Beach

Location: Bernice Dr, Galveston, TX 77554

Sunny beach is a local favorite, located on the west end off San Luis Pass Road, there are no lifeguards, or umbrella and chair rentals but the best things about this beach is that you are allowed to drive and park on the beach.  Set up you umbrella and have yourself a picnic while you fish, swim, surf, build sandcastles, and so much more. This is a great location to search for seashells.

Beach Pocket Park

Location: 11102 Termini-San Luis Pass Rd, Galveston, TX 77554

Beach Pocket Park gives you access to wide sandy beaches great for bird watching, kite flying, swimming and sunbathing. The great thing about this location is that you are allowed to drive and park on the beach as well as bring your dog. Park next to the water and set up your chairs and umbrella and enjoy a day in the sun. Dogs much be kept on a leash and cleaned up after.

Blessington Farms

Location: 510 Chisolm Trail, Wallis, TX 77485

Boy and Girl with Dip Net

Blessington Farms is currently open on Friday nights and Saturday days for 2 fun filled days with different events going on both day. Friday from 4pm- 8pm the farm is open for a night of fishing, flower picking, s’mores and more. Saturday the farm is open from 9am -2pm for flower picking and the Funland is open. Please purchase tickets in advance, if you can, and be very observant of the sanitizing rules.

Lake Houston Wilderness Park

Location: 25840 FM 1485, New Caney, TX 77357

Reconnect with nature at the Lake Houston Wilderness Park. Enjoy over 20 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails or bring your kayak for a ride around the creeks.

Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Location: 4501 Woodway Dr, Houston, TX 77024

Allow your kids to explore nature on the amazing grounds of the Houston Arboretum and Nature Park from 7 a.m. to dusk. The Nature Shop is open Monday- Friday from 10am-4pm but unfortunately the playground remains closed ta this time.

Houston Museum of Natural Science

Location: 5555 Hermann Park Dr, Houston, TX 77030

The Houston Museum of Natural science is now open, but only at 25% occupancy. They advice to purchase tickets prior to your visit in order to guarantee entrance on that day and guest over the age of 10 must wear a face mask. Be advised that all exhibits are not open yet but are planned to open in the near future.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Location: 1001 Bissonnet St, Houston, TX 77005

For all you art lovers the Museum of Fine Arts is now open. It is strongly advised to purchase tickets online and prior to visit to guarantee entrance, like other attractions around the city the Museum of Fine Arts in reducing the amount of visitors per day. Face masks are required but don’t let that stop you from seeing amazing works of art from different time periods. The museum is open Wednesday – Sunday, hours vary.

Lone Star Flight Museum

Location: 11551 Aerospace Ave, Houston, TX 77034

The Lone Star Flight Museum is now reopened for public tours and will be operating at 25% capacity. The museum is offering discounted rate tickets as they are aware of the financial burden this pandemic has caused. Enjoy both the Waltrip and Heritage Hangars will be open as well as the overlooks, Heritage Gallery, Texas Aviation Hall of Fame and the museum gift shop. Visit the Lone Star Flight Museum Tuesday – Saturday from 10am – 5pm and Sunday from 12pm – 5pm.

Space Center Houston

Location: 1601 E NASA Pkwy, Houston, TX 77058

No list would be complete without an incredible place where you can learn about and explore space. Space Center Houston is still currently closed but is offering amazing online interactive virtual tours. Learn about life as an astronaut, get a virtual history lesson of the Apollo fuel cell and so much more. The Space Center has announced they will be reopening July 1st, so mark your calendars.

Final Thoughts

It is exciting for many to be able to leave the house after some months of staying indoors. Just remember to observe the COVID prevention rules. Alternatively, take advantage of virtual events and food deliveries to a void places that may attract crowds.
