Severe Weather Preparedness at Kidventure Overnight Camp

A safe, caring place for kids to grow, even when the weather is unpredictable.

At Kidventure, safety is always our first priority. We know this past summer’s Central Texas floods have left many parents with questions about how camps respond to severe weather. While our Overnight Camp facilities are located on high ground and outside of floodplains, we believe in being ready for anything. That’s why every session begins with clear safety practices, every staff member is trained in flood response, and we maintain daily communication with parents. Below are answers to the most common questions we hear about flooding and severe weather.

Flooding & Emergency Preparedness

What happens if flooding occurs near camp during my child’s stay?

If flooding happens during camp, we enact detailed safety protocols immediately. Campers are moved to elevated buildings and activities near the river stop until conditions are safe.

Has the camp experienced flooding before?

Our Overnight Camps take place near the headwaters of the Nueces River, where there’s very little watershed upstream. We have not experienced flooding at camp, but we maintain strong protocols in case it ever occurs.

Are the campgrounds located in a floodplain?

No. All lodging is outside the floodplain and built on elevated ground.

How will parents be notified if severe weather occurs?

Parents are updated daily during camp, and in the case of severe weather, communication will be ongoing. We use email and our app to keep you informed quickly and consistently.

Camp Safety Infrastructure

Are cabins and facilities protected from flooding?

Yes. Cabins and lodges are built at higher elevations, with drainage systems in place.

Do you keep emergency supplies on hand?

Yes. We maintain food, water, first aid, and generators on site. Generators power essentials like food service, communications, and water pumps.

Are staff trained in flood response?

Yes. All staff receive training in flood and severe weather preparedness before camp begins.

Transportation & Logistics

What happens if buses or parent drop-offs can’t reach camp due to flooding?

Schedules will be adjusted, and parents will be notified of new plans if travel routes are impacted.

Is there a backup location if camp becomes unsafe?

Our main campus, Headwaters, is outside any known floodplain and has never flooded. In case of other emergencies, we have designated safe areas around camp.

Do you coordinate with local authorities?

Yes. We maintain communication with local authorities and have satellite phones in case cell service is down.

Camper Support

How are campers reassured if weather disrupts camp?

We communicate openly and calmly with campers during weather events. Keeping them informed and cared for is part of our safety culture.

Do you have medical staff on site?

Yes. We have a full-time nurse and medical staff available, and we can access mediflight services if needed.

Refunds & Insurance

What if camp is cancelled due to flooding?

Tuition is non-refundable for weather-related events. We are exploring additional travel insurance options for families.
