City ArtWorks’ mission is to be a leading visual arts education resource, fostering skill development and self-expression through creative programming, collaborations, and exhibitions.
City ArtWorks (CA) was founded in 1982 as Creative Alternatives to help address the steady reduction of arts education within the public school system. CA began by offering after school arts classes to 300 children in 12 schools. Today, with a staff of three full time administrators, one part-time intern, and 60+ art teachers hired as independent contractors, CA serves more than 3,000 children directly each year, and several thousand more through the many community wide festivals in Houston providing free art-making experiences for children.
City ArtWorks’ primary goal is to offer as many children as possible the opportunity to explore their own creativity through the process of making and appreciating art. Our organization’s particular objectives are to continue to expand effective after-school programming, community collaborations, partnerships with local and state arts organizations, and efforts that focus on schools and apartment complexes in low-income neighborhoods throughout the greater Houston area.
